Apply to be a Tumblr Fellow at the Personal Democracy Forum!

How is technology changing society, politics and civic life? Thats the question tackled every summer at the Personal Democracy Forum (PDF) conference at NYU. If it’s also a question that gets you excited, then you’ll be happy to know that Tumblr and PDF are teaming up to offer conference fellowships that cover the full registration costs and a meal with the team from Tumblr at PDF13. Ten applicants will be selected to attend this year’s conference on June 6-7.

We’re looking for people and organizations who are using technology and social media in innovative, meaningful ways to affect positive change. If that’s you, apply by taking a few minutes to fill out this brief form.

The deadline for applications is 6pm EST on Friday, April 26th, 2013. Winners will be notified the following week.

More than 31,000 Americans were killed by firearms in 2011, yet there are fewer than 20 academics who study gun violence. Part of this is because lobby groups have inserted language into laws preventing organizations like the CDC from funding gun research. Regardless of one’s view on guns, that smells like an anti-science way of doing things to me.

Nature News has an awesome profile of one of these researchers: Meet Garen Wintemute

We’ve got the perfect summer-break job for someone who digs data, has a nose for news and works fast.

It’s six weeks on WNYC’s Data News Team. Join us and you will:

Help WNYC cover breaking news, like our Hurricane Sandy work

Help reporters find and mine data for major stories

Help make maps, charts and web apps

Help brainstorm and build feature projects, like the Dogs of New York

Help the journalism we do in New York and New Jersey

Have a fun time with a fun team

Our ideal helper loves the challenge of finding information and data, and enjoys working with it once it’s in our hands. They’re creative, inquisitive and unafraid of new technologies.

The gig runs from mid-May through June, and pays $3,000 for the period. It’s geared for college students, especially those in a journalism program with data skillz or those in a computer science program with interests or experience in journalism.

It’s a limited-time offer, so act now! Apply with this quick form.

Everyone, Together

This webpage is about one mile long (depending on your browser resolution). It has one figure for every person on Earth, color-coded by region.

It is a stunning way to put into scale the 7+ billion people on Earth. I’ve zoomed in and out and my mind is just sort of blown. I don’t know who you are, person #5,779,280,035, but you look great.

Previously: Killer interactive “scale of the universe” app because WHOOOOOA.

How much space each person has in some of the world’s major cities

Learning code & sharing code

babydatajournalism:

Idea for teaching:

If each student sets up a free GitHub account —

They can make Gists, like this:

https://gist.github.com/macloo/5363602

Could these be used for peer grading? Easy to share.

Once the student has a GitHub account, he/she can write code in Codepen (http://codepen.io/) and automatically save to Gist from there.

I’m probably going to introduce Git to students who are collaborating, even where they aren’t working with code.

I sincerely fail to understand why people continue to create...

I sincerely fail to understand why people continue to create these as giant images, but they do.

kqedscience:

“Tim de Chant has a wonderfully creative blog called Per Square Mile, where he thinks about population density. Last summer, he decided to a little experiment. He asked himself: Suppose I could move everybody on Earth into a single city. How much space would that city occupy?

Would it cover half a continent? Or could we fit all humanity into New Jersey?”
